Definition of ‘Cash Flow’

Cash flow is the movement of money in or out of a business, measured during a specific period of time, usually a year.

Cash flow is shown on the cash flow statement, and can be categorized into one of three activities operations, investing and financing.

Cash flow can also be calculated by taking the difference between the cash balance at the beginning of the accounting period and the cash balance at the end of the period. Both these cash balances are shown on the balance sheet.

The cash flow definition for use in the financial projections template is calculated as the total of the cash flows from operations, investing and financing activities.

The closing cash balance can be obtained by adding the cash flow to the opening cash balance.
